Teaching Tips
for Youth 1 Classes

Bible Lesson

The Bible Lesson is designed to be talked, not read to class. Teaching the Bible is a great honor and solemn responsibility.

Teacher Preparation At the top of each lesson are Scripture references to read in preparing the lesson and Visuals that will be used.

Opening Sequence (optional) lists a suggested order for the Sunday school time and includes songs to sing and the memory verse for the lesson.

Highlighted Headings throughout the lesson give the teacher a glance at what is coming next. Do not read printed lesson word for word, but glance at headings and words in bold type to aid your memory and for emphasis. Practice talking through story several times.

Teaching Visuals are noted within the lesson. Check that you have the correct Visual ready to show. Have helper hold up charts, maps, and visuals at appropriate times in lesson. For convenience in teaching place the Teaching Visuals face up on the corner of a table or desk, along with your Bible. As you teach, hold each visual in one hand (be careful not ot cover the art). When you finish with the visual, place it on an easel, chalk tray, or table.

Suggested Songs include choruses and hymns. Be sure to familiarize yourself with each song before singing it with your students. The words and music are in the Joyful Singing for Teens for the current quarter.

Teaching a New Song on CD

  • Class listens to new song on CD
  • Leader sings new song with CD
  • Leader and class sing song 2-3 times with CD

Memory Verses are included in most lessons. Introduce the verse as you momentarily hold the Bible in your hand and say the reference aloud to the class. Then use the appropriate verse from the Verse Visuals packet as you continue to teach and review the verse. Have the class repeat the verse with you three times. Saying the verse together as a class helps all the students learn the verse. The class should also repeat the verse two times at the end of the lesson if time allows. Note: As you finish each verse visual, display it in the classroom to use in reviewing memory verse.

Distribute Focus handouts after class. There are review passages and Scripture related to the week's lesson. Encourage students to read the Scriptures each week.

Each teacher needs an Assistant for class (one or more depending on class size). They are responsible for preliminaries at beginning (including Key Verse), attendence, and giving Focuses as class exists. Also, select someone to phone absentees regarding illness or special needs.

Prayer

Prayer is important. Throughout the week, ask God to help you prepare, and to bless as you teach the lesson. Your ultimate success as a teacher will reflect your dependence and walk with the Lord.

How to lead a person to Christ (Pray that those unsaved will trust Christ as Savior.)

Verses to be familiar with and use leading someone to Christ:

  • God loves us and sent his Son, Jesus, to take our punishment for sin. “While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us”—Romans 5:8.
  • The way to trust Christ is to Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved”—Acts 16:31.
